How to forage your own flowers

Posted by HasThemes Collaborator on

Ok mamas, if you love flowers the way I do, there is nothing more beautiful than fresh flowers in your home. Adding them to your workspace, kitchen table, or even next to your sink, so when you're doing dishes for the 10th time, you have something pretty to look at.

On your next hike, bike ride, or walk, make sure you have a pair of sharp scissors so that you can forage Mother Nature's beauty, wild flowers. Before I give you the tips on doing this, please always keep in mind that this is a gift, given to us, and that it is not to be take for granted. So don't pull from the root, or cut a whole damn tree off, lol.

Ok... so here are the tips.

1. The best time to forage is in the early morning, before the sun gets too hot.

2. If you're planning on moving through bushes or tall grass, it's very important to wear long sleeves and tall boots. Lyme disease is a real thing, and not to mention all other kinds of insects.

3. Have a sharp pair of scissors, make sure you cut the stem, be mindful, do not pull on the flowers or branches.

4. Always ask permission from the land owner if you forage greenery, if you're not sure if it's legal, find out. In most situations if you're respectful, and don't overdo it, it's usually not a problem.

5. Once you've cut the flowers and greenery, place them in a basket, and put them in cold water as soon as you can.

6. Style them however you like, I love using bud vases that way I can place them all around my house.

7. Last but not least, thank Mother Nature for her beauty, and fill your heart with gratitude.

Lots of love to all you mamas

10 things to consider buying when having a vaginal birth

Posted by Sherry Pipano on

There are so many things to think about when having a baby for the first time. It's simply overwhelming. We rarely think about our recovery process, we're just waiting to see our baby, hold them, kiss them, because we've waited so damn long to meet them! I knew nothing about what happens after delivering your baby. I heard about the mental struggle, possible depression, unstable hormones. I heard nothing about the physical. I didn't even think about it to be honest. So if there are any mamas out there like me, I've put a list together for you.... so that you don't need to think about it until the time comes, with this list you'll be ready. So here are the things that really helped me out.

Mother’s Milk Tea. They say it can help with breast milk production.

Sitz bath Pan. The hospital may give you a sitz bath pan and a squirt bottle for both hemorrhoids and vagina. Basically you fill up the pan with warm water, place it on top of your toilet, and sit in it for 20 min. It's so soothing, I can't even tell you. I purchased Earth Mama's Herbal Sitz Bath to include in my sitz bath, and it totally helped. After the sitz bath, I used the squirt bottle to clean the area well. Then I would put on hemorrhoid cream that my hospital gave me and I was healed in less than a week. I also useddonut-shaped pillow. This is a pillow to sit on when you have hemorrhoids or stitches after birth. This helped me so much!!

Nipple cream. If your nipples are seriously damaged from learning to breastfeed for the first time, the best cream I ever used was prescribed to me by my doctor. It’s the Dr.Jack Newman cream, they’ll know what it is. It basically healed my nipples in between feeds, MAGIC. If for some reason you don't have access to this cream, you can try Earth Mama's Nipple Butter, I've heard incredible things.

Breast pump. I got the the Medela Double Breast Pump  as a gift, when I had to go back to work pretty much 2 weeks after giving birth.

Ice Maxi Pads by Frida. These are the best cooling pads for down there, just a 20 minute treatment, but does wonders!

Witch Hazel Liners by Frida. These are really nice to put on top of your cooling pads, witch hazel can reduce swelling, it's worth a try!

Disposable Postpartum Underwear by Frida. These are so comfy, I don't know where to begin. The truth is, they're also great to have in the hospital with you, not just after birth. The amount of bleeding will vary for everyone, I just found that these came in handy for some of the heaviest days after birth.

Tylenol Extra Strength saved me when I was in pain.

Postpartum recovery belt. If you think you might want one, the Belly Bandit or other similar belt can help keep things in place as your belly shrinks back to size.

Breastfriend pillow. This helped me sooo much in the first 2 months, that I would say if you're having your first baby, it's nice to have for support.

If you're reading this, you're probably pregnant, just about to give birth, already gave birth and desperate to relieve pain, or none of the above and just curious about after birth stuff, which is amazing! Either way, this is something a lot of women go through, and as overwhelming as it may sound, we're in this together! Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

Lots of love to all you mamas!

The 10 best baby items on amazon that made my mom life so easy!

Here's a list of items that truly made my life just a little easier as a new mom, and I hope it works for you too!

1. Newborn Phillips Avent soothers

3. Wabanub stuffed animal soother (newborn - 3M)

4. Comotomo bottles: one of the best bottles in the market for weaning your baby off the boob!

6. Baby Breeza Formula Pro Advanced So... I actually only found out about this when my baby was 11 months old... and it's one of my biggest regrets, not getting it. I will definitely be purchasing this for my next baby.

7. Boon LAWN drying rack: I got the smaller one to start, and then ended up ordering the bigger one as she got older and had more things to dry. Looking back I would have just ordered the bigger one.

8. Baby Bjorn Bouncer : A little pricey, but I was able to fold it up, and go to nana's without feeling overwhelmed. I even brought it with me when I wanted to shower, and I put her right in there, she loved it! I do not regret this purchase.

9. Milk Snob: So, if you're baby is born in the summer, this is so perfect for those summer days. It fits right over the car seat and you know you're baby is protected from the sun.

10. Skip Hop Diaper Bag Backpack: Is it the nicest looking diaper bag in the market? Absolutely not, but listen, when you're taking this bag with you every where you go, you'll want something lightweight & practical. So for that reason I love this bag!

Ok really, 11 items, lol. The Ergobaby or the Boba is totally essential for keeping your baby close when you're too tired to hold them.

You've got 40% in your reserve.

Posted by HasThemes Collaborator on

“The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine”.

Ok, so when I first read this quote, I felt like shit. I’m like great, how will I know what my future is if I'm currently non stop changing diapers, cooking and cleaning all day. My daily routine is all about Lea, don't get me wrong, I’m mostly happy about it, but when I think about my goals, I’m like hooowwww am I supposed to work towards them when I have NOOO time.

The truth is, I got tired of hearing myself saying "I have noooo time". I said that for too long, and the only person that's hurting is me. So, I recently stopped that negative train of thought and really started to break down my day.

I realized the only time I get to work on anything for myself is when Lea is napping and when she goes to sleep. When she naps, I get 2 hours to pump out whatever work I can.  When she goes to bed, well that's when netflix calls my ass to the couch. I can barely keep my eyes open I'm so exhausted. Ben always likes to remind me that I go to bed at 10:30, and that I actually have 4 hours to do whatever I want. Of course I argue back "But I'm tireedddd", which I am, but really it's an excuse. Ben loves pointing out that I surrender to my exhaustion. I want to kill him every time he says it, but he’s right.

I remember hearing about the book“LIVING WITH A SEAL”, by Jesse Itzler. he had a Navy Seal come live with him and his family for a month to teach them lessons of mental toughness. He talks about the 40% rule. He says “When your mind is telling you that you’re done, that you’re exhausted, that you cannot possibly go any further, you’re only actually 40% done. The 40% rule reminds us that no matter how exhausted we might feel, it is always possible to draw on an untapped reserve of energy, motivation, and drive that we all possess.”

So, this past week, I did let Netflix call my ass to the couch, BUT I made sure to take my laptop with me, and even though my eyes are fighting to be closed, I just typed away, and found a way to do whatever it was that I needed to do for my future self. With this change I now have 4 extra hours a day to work towards my personal goals. I’m happy that I found a solution, and that it's working for me. There are still moments where I fight my old self, I just want to say it "i'm tooo tire..." but I stop myself: "NO you got this, think about your future self"

Now, what about you? Think about your future self, who do you want to become? What are the things you want to achieve, because Mama, I'm the first one to agree with you that our days are exhausting, but I will also remind you that you need to tap in to that 40% you have left in your reserve. So take whatever time you have in your day, and do what you love, for you. Because once that day is over, we can’t ever get it back. How much we do today will bring us closer to where we want to be.

Lots of love, tell me if you’re struggling, I would love to try and help you find a way to get to where you want to be.

Lots  of love,

Sherry Pipa

Checklist Before Having Your First Baby

Posted by Sherry Pipano on

When you become a new mom, you have no idea what you need, but you want to be ready for everything. There are a lot of things that I purchased, that served no purpose but the things that I did purchase that I was so happy about, I thought, I have to pass this on to other future mamas! Of course every child is different, and not all of these items may resonate with you, but if they do, I would invest in them, in some ways they made our lives so much easier at such an overwhelming time.

With COVID-19, Amazon has been the best option to safely purchase anything for my baby. All these items can be ordered directly from Amazon!

Halo Bassinet + Organic Mattress. Why do I love this? This bassinet can hover over your bed, and you barely have to get up to remove the baby. So for those really exhausting nights in the beginning, this was the best thing I could have asked for. TIP ** I wouldn’t suggest getting the newborn insert, you can’t really see the baby with it, and that defeats the point of having the bassinet. But I did make sure to get the extra padding for comfort and the mobile for music.

Ollie swaddle. I didn’t buy this right away and I so regret it. If you’re planning on swaddling your baby, this is the swaddle to invest in. Other swaddles were so complicated, and I was always worried I was tying it on too tight or not tight enough. This one was so simple, and the fabric is made out of a special breathable material, you will not regret it.

White noise machine. This was incredible, because our babies are so used to this sound in the womb, the white noise machine helps them transition to the outside world. Try and find one that has a night light option. If your baby is super colicky, you might want to consider investing in a portable one.

Mesa car seat. This car seat is compatible with the UPPABaby Vista and Cruz, it was a no brainer, I just had to get it. If your baby is born in the winter, I would highly recommend getting a winter cover for your car seat. You will most likely be running errands with your baby in their car seat, since waking up a sleeping baby and transferring them in to a stroller seat is something you really won't want to do.

Stroller. I love the UPPAbaby Vista, I have zero complaints living in Toronto with it, it’s so sturdy and the basket is big enough for me to put everything I need in it, groceries, bags, you name it! I also love that the wheels are massive, and we’re planning on having babies back to back, so there’s an adapter to add another bassinet or car seat! I also purchased the cup holder, it was so necessary for my morning strolls, along with  a stroller organizer, and you're all set!

The Baby Boba Wrap or Ergobaby carrier with the newborn insert. Doing skin to skin while washing dishes isn’t always possible, but with either of these carriers it is! I love wraps so I actually purchased both. The ergo you can use for when they get a bit older, great for walking around town! I always believed that babies need to be as close to mama and as much as you can for the first few months is always suggested.

Milk snob. I loved using this in the summer, it was so perfect, blocked out the sun, I was able to use it as a breastfeeding cover, I just adore this thing!

4 pack of  Aden + Adenais muslin swaddle blankets. Why this brand? They’re breathable, soft, versatile and so perfect for a newborn. You can use them to cover your stroller on a sunny day, for coverage while breastfeeding, as a birth cloth, or to keep your baby warm. LOVE the patterns, 10/10!

Mamaroo. I used mine up until Lea was 6 months, she looooveeeeddd it!!! I love the option of propping them up so that you can see them. The only downfall is that the mobile doesn't move on it's own, but this helped us out in our most desperate times. Lea would doze off in it for a few hours, even though they say not to let them sleep in it, but it's kinda hard not letting a baby sleep in there, since that's all they do! She loved the motion, the white noise, and I would use my foot to turn it on or off so I didn't have to bend forward which was nice after giving birth and being in pain. This is an investment, I would really recommend it if you're planning on having more babies.

WubbaNub  Infant Pacifier. Ok so I LOVED this soother, it was perfect for Lea to eventually hold on to, and that way it never went missing.

Hospital outfit for baby. I bought Lea her first onesie and hat  from by KYTE.  Why do I love this brand so much? Because it’s organic, soft and knowing your baby is just so comfy in this material, it’ll make your heart warm up! I also love that the fabric is quite stretchy, so they don't grow out of it too quickly. I've squeezed Lea in to hers for a good few months, lol.

Comotomo Baby Bottles. My bestie told me about these bottles. She swore by them, and now I do too. Lea had no problem weaning Lea off the boob with these bottles. They're worth every penny.

Diaper bag. I bought mine from Skip Hop. It’s lightweight, a backpack style which is always great because we never have extra hands, and it comes with everything you need. There are plenty of other options, some are more fashion forward, but I really wanted to go for practicality when it came to a diaper bag.

Diapers & wipes. I wanted to make sure I had organic ones for the first month, just because they're skin is so sensitive. I love the Seventh Generation brand so much. Their quality is impeccable and they're scent-free. **There are newborn size diapers, don’t get size 1 those are too big. While you're at it, if your baby develops a diaper rash, this is always great to have on hand the Weleda Calendula Cream. I bought one for my diaper bag, and one for my diaper station at home so I never forgot it.

Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 Crib and the Babyletto Dresser and Change Tray So I originally purchased an entire baby furniture set form Wayfair, boy was that a mistake. The quality was awful, the inside of the drawers smelled toxic, I was incredibly disappointed. They reimbursed me, but I decided to purchase this Babyletto Hudson 3 -in-1 furniture set, and I don't regret it one bit.

Boon Soak 3-Stage Bathtub. Lea took her first bath in this tub, and she's been using until now, I absolutely adore this and really feel like I got my money's worth!

So, if you're pregnant and are starting to plan out your registry, you know exactly what you need!

Wishing all you mamas to be so much love! xoxoxoxo
